While Indiana isn’t a common tourist destination or renowned vacation spot, it does offer a number of fun summer activities that families can enjoy if they’re looking for a more affordable option nearby or a chance to do something different while passing through the state. However, here are some of the more popular destinations that perhaps your family has missed:

Fair Oaks Farm

If you’re in Indiana, it only seems logical that getting a close up look at farming should be considered. Whether driving east to west or north to south, plenty of corn and bean fields will roll past. Livestock will also be easy to spot. Fair Oak Farms located near Winamac, Indiana off of Interstate Highway 65 in the northern half of the state will provide a fun and educational look modern dairy farming. One of the highlights is the opportunity to watch calves being born, which happens nearly 80 times every day. There’s a 3D theater, ice cream treats, and a variety of tours.

Circus History

More than a hundred years ago, one of the more popular circuses in the US called Peru Indiana their home, their winter home to be exact. When the circus retired, many of the perfomers remained in this area, and many of their descendents still live there.

Peru is now home to the International Circus Hall of Fame. It’s a small but very impressive museum that is open May 1 through October 31. In summer, visitors to the area get a unique chance to see the world’s greatest amateur circus perform live. For 10 days in July each year, Circus City Festival Days are held. Parades, rides, food, and more, create a festive atmosphere. The crowning event however is the live 3 hour circus performances. With a rousing circus band, local performers put on a show to be remembered. Highwire acts, juggling, unicycles, trapeze artists, and clowns, are all part of the show.

Symphony on the Prairie

Conner Prairie is a historic village that recreates life in Indiana during the early period of our nation’s history. It’s located just outside of Indianapolis on it’s northeast side. A visit to this attraction allows families to see and become involved in re-eactments. During the summer, once the history park has wound down, more fun begins on the adjacent prairie. The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and visiting artists put on a show that adults and children alike can enjoy. With new mown hay adding fragrance to the air, the sun setting on the horizon, and music wafting out across the audience, this is a perfect romantic evening for couples or a fun filled event for a family with children who love to dance.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway

For those who like speed, then the Indianapolis Motor Speedway might be a good choice during the warm weather months as well. The track offers a variety of races throughout the season. Of course, Indy Cars are there in May. Attending the race is one possibility, but going to the more sparsely attended practices or qualifications can be almost as much fun, as well as more affordable. Garage passes allow families to get closer to the teams and during the month there are also opportunities to ride in the cars. The Speedway also has an extensive museum highlighting Indy’s history, Indy cars, sports cars, and more.
